Hedi Baxter Lauffer
Hedi Baxter Lauffer is co-founder and co-owner of the indoor gardening company, LED Habitats LLC. Previously she directed the Wisconsin Fast Plants Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. For more than 25 years, the Fast Plants Program has served researchers and educators across the nation and around the world, using the quick-growing Brassica plant developed at UW-Madison. Lauffer directed multiple projects through the Fast Plants Program, including a $4.7 million, USDA-funded, collaborative project with the College of Menominee Nation. Across these projects, Lauffer implemented hands-on lessons and activities as well as social networking strategies to build interest and participation in learning with and about plants. Lauffer’s horticultural expertise with Wisconsin Fast Plants grew as a natural extension of more than five years’ experience developing and managing a wholesale organic produce farm in Hartford, Wisconsin. Lauffer’s PhD is from UW-Madison in science education and learning sciences; her research focuses on conceptual change and interactive learning environments for educators. Lauffer brings to the LED Habitats company knowledge about and a passion for indoor and outdoor gardening, as well as learning with and appreciating plants.
