Barbara Ballinger is a professional writer, author, blogger and speaker who has long focused on real estate, design, and personal finance. She has co-authored more than 16 books, including Successful Homebuilding and Remodeling, The Kitchen Bible: Designing the perfect culinary space, The Garden Bible: Designing the perfect outdoor space, and most recently Suddenly Single after 50: The Girlfriends’ Guide to Navigating Loss, Restoring Hope, and Rebuilding Your Life. She regularly contributes to the National Association of Realtors® Website and its magazine, the Chicago Tribune, HanleyWoods’ Multifamily Executive magazine, YourHome1Source.com national website, Driver magazine for Subaru car owners, and many other publications.
She has also spoken at real estate conventions as an expert about real estate, been on the Oprah Winfrey show about remodeling disasters, been twice to the White House–to interview Tipper Gore and to do a story on the American antiques at the White House and State Department during President Carter’s administration. She started her career at House & Gardens’ special publications in New York, worked as a business reporter at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper, worked at the National Association of Realtors(R), and 28 years ago started her own writing business, www.barbaraballinger.com.
Although not a gardener professionally, she added a garden at her current home, following the advice in the book–hiring a couple, having them draw up a master plan, and slowly adding in plants. Her most recent adventure has been a vegetable garden with raised beds, and the bounty has worked into her cooking for family and friends.
